So yesterday was the AFF Skydive Ground School day. A gentle introduction to skydiving, what to expect, and everything you need to know to land safely on your feet.
A 9am start and didn’t finish till well past 5pm. It takes me an hour and a half to drive to the drop zone, so it was a long day!
I’d booked directly through the Hinton Skydive website but joined a different group of students who’d booked with Inifinite Skydive. It made no difference to me, I think I was the only one that had booked with Hinton that day, so instead of having 1 instructor teach me, it made sense for me to join a different group. If they were happy, I was happy.
There were 6 of us doing it, with 2 instructors, there’s a limit of 3 (or maybe 4) students per instructor.
At around lunchtime I was chatting with a couple of the other students about how cool it would be to do an actual jump on the same day, or so we thought. Come 16:30 my head couldn’t take in anymore skydiving drills!
Even more worryingly, that’s the time at which we learnt all the malfunction drills and what to do. Identifying a malformed canopy, cutting away, pulling your reserve chute, etc.
I was quite happy that it turned out to be too windy to do our first skydive that day!
It was a good day though, just a bit long and lots to absorb, having the night free to do that worked out perfectly.
Following the AFF Ground School, you’re usually expected to come back the next day for your first skydive. Unfortunately the weather was even worse today, so I didn’t go back.
I reckon I’ll be jumping next weekend, weather permitting!
